The Backbone of Your Campaign

What is Technical SEO & Why it Matters?

At the core of every strong SEO campaign is an even stronger technical SEO strategy. Technical SEO is the backbone, in my experience, of your website’s overall performance, ensuring that your website is built in a way that allows search engines to efficiently crawl, index, and understand your content.

Your SEO campaign is more than just content, keywords, and links (don’t get me wrong, these are also very important). It’s about also making it as easy as possible for search engines, and users, to find your site, navigate it, and understand it in its entirety.

A lot goes into a technical SEO strategy as well and it’s important to strategize accordingly, based on priorities for YOUR website and goals.

Technical SEO Solutions Built for YOU

Every website will have its own technical SEO opportunities, issues, and findings, making every project unique. So why does your current agency continue to provide run-of-the-mill solutions that aren’t needed for your specific website? This leaves room for error and overlooks important, key technical SEO tactics that are hindering your success.

In my experience, it’s important to take a deep dive under the hood of every website to uncover any potential technical SEO challenges that could be hindering your ability to rank as well as you could. I’ve learned unique techniques to uncover what most others can’t. Different content management systems, hosting environments, and coding languages all have their own intricacies so your solutions need to be custom-tailored. That’s what I am here for.

What's Involved?

Technical SEO Services That Get Results!

Technical Website Audit

With most things, I like to get an idea of what the current state looks like. I dive in to identify any immediate large technical items to ensure we’ll have no issues getting your site crawled frequently and indexed quickly. If identified, these items are prioritized and immediately remedied. From there, I’ll begin working on consistent technical changes to make sure the site has no issues in the future.

Order Of Impact Prioritization

Of course, we can’t tackle all things at once, so it’s important to prioritize any findings from the audit based on the order of impact. As every site is different, that can mean a few different things, but somethings included may be XML sitemap adjustments, robots.txt optimization to maximize crawl budget, site speed and performance, structured data, and more.

XML/HTML Sitemaps

Sitemaps have a large impact on your website’s ability to be crawled quickly and frequently. With an XML sitemap, this is our direct line to search engine spiders, so to speak. This file lists all of your priority, status 200 URLs and is built for bots. HTML sitemaps help ensure all pages are being linked to and there are no island or orphaned pages.

Structured Data / Schema

Structured data, or schema, is specific code that is used to markup and structure elements of your pages to provide search engine spiders more information about who you are and what you do. Some common examples that can be used are Service, LocalBusiness, Organization, Product, AggregateRating, Breadcrumb, and more! I’ve learned the ins and outs of proper structure data usage to identify and build the best-fit code for your needs that will have the biggest impact.

Robots.txt Optimization

Your robots.txt file is essentially the “rules of the house” for your website. This file tells these crawlers where they can and cannot go on your website, allowing us to maximize the crawl budget, make sure we are sending crawlers to the most important areas of the website, and keep them from areas that may not matter for SEO purposes. Things like search query pages, pagination, cluttered categories or tags, and more.

Site Speed

When we review site speed, we want to make sure that we are not just chasing a number. Leveraging tools like core web vitals in Search Console, GTMetrix, and PageSpeed Insights, we’ll identify the top priority items to handle as it relates to site speed. From reducing code bloat to deferring the load of non-important scripts, and more, I’ll work closely with you to maximize your load time and keep people engaged.

As part of my technical SEO solutions, you’ll receive comprehensive reporting on the impact of the changes that we make together. There are many things to report on but it’s important to focus on the things that matter from a technical SEO standpoint and how they impact YOUR goals.

That’s what I do! I tie back all of the changes we make to your overarching goals, showing the impact of specific changes made throughout your SEO campaign. Technical SEO FAQ

What is technical SEO? 🤖

Technical SEO is a strategy that focuses on optimizing and improving your website’s infrastructure and capabilities to help search engine crawlers find, crawl, and index your website more easily, improving its performance in search engines. It’s a critical component of any SEO campaign and includes canonicalization, sitemap optimization, speed and performance, structured data, robots.txt optimization, and more.

What strategies are included in technical SEO? 📝

There is no one-size-fits-all technical SEO strategy and each website should be approached uniquely to identify specific items to that site and business. That said, here are some things that are included.

  1. Canonicalization of domain – This ensures that no matter what version of the site a user types in (www. vs non-www. or http:// vs https://) they land on the single point of truth. This also helps search engines understand and also minimizes any duplicated content issues.
  2. XML sitemap optimization – XML sitemaps should include only pages that are live, status 200 URLs, as these sitemaps feed directly to search engine spiders.
  3. Robots.txt file optimization – Your robots file is essentially the “rules of the house” that are designed to provide search engines guidance on where they can and cannot go on your website. It’s important that this is optimized fully.
  4. Navigation – You can use site navigation to help users and crawlers more easily find important pages and navigate your site.
  5. Site speed – While not necessarily a “core ranking factor,” improving site speed and improve the amount of time it takes crawlers to find important information and can also add to the overall user experience.
  6. Structured data – Structuring the information and data on your site in an easy to read javascript code, you can help provide more information about elements on a page to search engines, helping them gain a better understanding of what you do and where you do it.

These are just a few technical SEO strategies involved. Reach out today to see the technical opportunities on your site.

How much does technical SEO cost? 💰

This is a question I get often and can wildly vary based on the current state of your website. I’ll start by providing a review and audit of the potential technical opportunities and build a custom pricing structure and package for your needs. One thing to note though is that it will be more affordable than working with larger agencies and it will be more beneficial and impactful 😉.

How does technical SEO affect performance? 📈

There are many factors that are considered when ranking a website, which include many technical items. Your SEO campaign can only get you as far as the technical integrity of your website, meaning you can have the best on-site SEO, but if you have technical items that are not addressed, you may not see the results you are looking for. Technical SEO specifically addresses issues that may get in the way of your website being found, crawled, and indexed.

Hear From Past Clients

Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of helping customers worldwide handle all of their technical SEO challenges and take their websites to the next level. Hear from some of my past clients on their experiences working with me.

Kendall Green
Director of Digital Marketing

I had the pleasure of working with Logan over the past two years to advise on SEO best practices and restructure our URLs during a redesign of our website. From the beginning, Logan proved to be a valuable asset with his extensive knowledge of technical SEO, site architecture, and on-page SEO. His expertise significantly eased the challenging two-year redesign process and ensured our site’s page rankings recovered in less than a month despite numerous URL changes.

Logan’s ability to collaborate effectively was crucial. He consistently came prepared to every meeting, fostering a positive working environment and maintaining high morale, even during tense moments. Logan managed the mapping of over 1,000 redirects, advised on which pages would be best to kill, and organized the new URL structure seamlessly.

Josh Moser
Cofounder & CTO

We are constantly hitting goals and deliverables; and frequently revisiting longer term objectives and areas that we are seeking to improve upon. Overall, we are more than likely the ones not hitting living up to our end of the bargain when it comes to timelines. Communication and timeliness are top of mind for Logan. We are so fortunate to be working with such a reliable SEO professional.

Shannon Casey
Website & Digital Marketing Manager

Logan often took on tasks that were challenging with a positive attitude and a determined manner. It is safe to say that without him, the Jonathan Green website redesign project would not have been as successful. Due to his work of mapping and implementing hundreds of redirects, the Jonathan Green site’s traffic and SEO value had a minor two week dip directly after launch, then bounced back stronger.

I highly recommend Logan not only for his capabilities in SEO, but also his professionalism, positive demeanor, and management style. I will miss working with him. Thanks Logan!
